The mission of the New York Harbor Foundation is to create and support a diverse network of environmentally literate students, schools, and communities working together to restore New York Harbor.

Flagship Initiatives:

Harbor School

Founded in 2003 and established on Governors Island in 2010, the Harbor School provides a college preparatory education built upon NYC's maritime experience and instills in students the ethics of environmental stewardship and skills needed for on-water careers. Students travel to the island each school day to learn and experience the many aspects of marine studies.

billion oyster project

The Billion Oyster Project is a large-scale plan to restore a sustainable oyster population to New York Harbor and to reconnect New Yorkers to their local marine ecosystem by restoring one billion oysters by 2035. Restoring oysters and reefs will enable the local marine environment to maintain itself, resulting in cleaner water and greater biodiversity.
